Looking at the business landscape today, I’ll like to describe it as being vuCa (with a capital C). The world is getting more complex than before attributed by the other elements of volatility, uncertainty and ambiguity. As the pace of change outside many organizations moved many times faster than what’s changing within, many leaders are struggling with maintaining or refreshing a good rhythm in their organizations to keep pace with those dynamics.

Mega-trends like environmental crisis, technologies convergence, globalization, demographic shifts, etc are causing the future to be veiled by uncertainty. To make matter worse, consumers’ and users’ needs are getting more ambiguous than ever due to the influence of various cultures, values, learnings from diverse interactions, and the external forces and dynamics of their environments. Hence, the world (being systemic and interconnected) can only get more complex in future. In additions to these characteristics, the digital “storm”, spurred by the proliferation of technologies, caused the world to be even more vuCa now.

How then do we navigate through this complexity?

Before that, I think it’s important for us to recognize our operating context(s), if it’s really complex or its just complicated. I like how Michael Arena, author of the book ‘Adaptive Space’…
